THE FLYING RED HORSE
JANUARY 4, 2019
When I was a kid, growing up in Irving, Texas, I always loved traveling into the downtown Dallas area with my parents with hopes of getting a glimpse of "the flying red horse" that was perched atop the Magnolia Building. It could be seen for miles. Pegasus stayed there, watching over downtown, until 1999, when, in all its rusted glory, it was taken down. On January 1, 2000 a new Pegasus took flight atop the location.
But the question remained, "where was the original Pegasus?" Seems it took some digging, but the original was located, restored, and placed on a rotating base outside the Omni hotel in 2015.
My first job of the year was to do some architectural photography in Dallas of a building just a block or so away from Pegasus, so I decided to walk down when my shoot wrapped and snag a quick shot. A Dallas icon, for sure.
